Awards and Honours

1968:          Australian Commonwealth Postgraduate Award. Three year scholarship for Ph.D research, James Cook University.

1975           Fullbright Fellowship for  post-doctoral study in USA. 

1975-76      Post-Doctoral Fellow at Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

1980           Australian Research Grants Commission Fellowship for study in USA. Visiting Fellow at Centre for Reading, University of Illinois, (Urbana) and Centre for Language and Literacy, University of Arizona, (Tucson).

1990           International Year of Literacy Medal for ‘Contributions to Australian Literacy Education’

1991           Ethel Hayton Award by the University of Wollongong for Services to the Community  (with Dr Jan Turbill)

1995          Awarded the inaugural Garth Boomer Award by the Australian Literacy Educators Association ( previously Australian Reading Association) for Contributions to Literacy Education.

1998           Inducted into the International Reading Association’s Reading Hall Of Fame.

2001          Awarded the Outstanding Educator in Language Arts Award by The Elementary Education Section of the National Council of Teachers of  English . (USA)

2002           Life Membership Whole language Umbrella

2006           Carrick Institute National Award For Teaching & Learning in Higher Education ( With Julie Kiggins)

2008           Australian College of Education: Outstanding Achievement in Education Award

  2012           International Reading Association’s William S Gray Citation of Merit NSW Department of Educaton’s award for ‘ Meritorious Service to Public Education’

2013.          Life membership Primary English Teachers Association of Australia (PETAA)
